How to revise for GCSEs: what actually works

Every GCSE student eventually stares at the same mountain: two years of content across nine or ten subjects, and a stack of folders that seems to grow the more you look at it. The instinct is to start at the bottom and read your way up — open the notes, read them through, highlight the important bits, feel vaguely reassured, move on. It feels like revising. The uncomfortable truth is that it's one of the least effective things you can do with the time, and it's the reason so many students revise hard and still feel unready. This guide is the honest version: what the evidence actually says works, why, and how to do it without needing three colours of highlighter.

The one-sentence answer

Stop re-reading and start testing yourself: the two techniques with by far the strongest research support are retrieval practice (recalling things from memory) and spacing (spreading it over time), and other techniques can help but should usually support — not replace — retrieval, practice and repeated revisiting.

This guide is written for GCSE students in England and the parents helping them, but the method works for any exam.

Why the way most people revise doesn't work

Here's the finding that should change how you spend your revision time. In a widely cited 2013 review of ten learning techniques, Dunlosky and colleagues rated practice testing and distributed (spaced) practice as "high utility" — effective across ages and subjects. A familiar group was rated "low utility": re-reading, highlighting and underlining, and summarising. That "low utility" verdict means their benefits were more limited or inconsistent across learners and tasks — not that they can never help; they should normally support active practice rather than replace it.

That last group is exactly what most students spend most of their revision doing.

The reason is a trap called fluency. When you re-read a page, it feels familiar and easy, and your brain reads that ease as "I know this." But recognising information when it's in front of you is a completely different skill from recalling it when the page is shut and the exam clock is running. Highlighting has the same problem — it feels like progress, but colouring a sentence doesn't make it stick. Productive effort — trying to retrieve or apply knowledge and then checking the result — usually builds more durable learning than simply recognising the material on a page.

The two things that do the heavy lifting

Retrieval practice — testing yourself from memory. Instead of reading your notes on photosynthesis, close them and write down everything you can remember. Then check what you missed. That effortful act of pulling the information out — sometimes called active recall — is what strengthens the memory far more than putting it back in by reading. It feels worse, because you're confronted with what you don't know yet — but it only pays off when you then check and fix what you got wrong. Flashcards, past-paper questions from memory, and "brain dumps" on a blank page are all retrieval practice.

Spacing — spreading it out. The same total revision time produces much stronger memory when it's split across days than crammed into one sitting. Revising a topic today, again in a few days, and again the following week beats three hours on it this afternoon and never again. Spacing is why starting earlier with short sessions beats a heroic all-nighter, and why cramming can get you through a test the next morning but leaves almost nothing behind.

Put them together and you have the engine of effective revision: test yourself, space it out, and keep returning to the things you got wrong.

How to actually do it

The techniques are simple; the method for a real GCSE workload is where students get stuck. Here's a practical way to run it.

  1. Find the gaps, not the feelings. Don't revise what feels scary — revise what you actually can't do. Work through a past paper or a topic checklist and mark each topic red, amber or green by whether you can answer questions on it unaided. Your red topics are where the marks are hiding.   2. Turn notes into questions. As you make or review notes, convert them into questions on the other side of a card or page — "What are the three ways to reduce heat loss from a house?" rather than a paragraph about it. Now your notes are a self-test, not a re-read.
  3. One clear goal per block, active from the start. Pick one thing to master, shut the book, and produce something from memory before you check anything. A focused 25–40 minute block beats a vague two-hour drift. Across a week, deliberately mixing topics or problem types can help too — especially in maths and science, where part of the skill is spotting which method a question needs.
  4. Space the return. Put each topic back into the week a few days later — a quick re-test, not a full re-learn. The goal is to meet your weak topics several times, briefly, rather than once, heavily.
  5. Practise in exam language. Once the knowledge is solid, practise applying it the way the paper demands. The command words tell you whether a question wants you to describe, explain or evaluate, and knowing how the mark scheme awards marks turns "I know this topic" into "I can score on this topic." Match the method to the subject

Retrieval and spacing are universal, but the form changes by subject. Fact-heavy content — biology, history dates, English quotations, definitions, formulae — suits flashcards and brain dumps. Skills-and-application subjects — maths, the sciences' calculations, extended writing — need worked practice questions under something like exam conditions, because the retrieval you're practising is a method, not just a fact.

Starting, and keeping going

The hardest session is the first one, and the second hardest is the one after a bad day. Two honest points here.

On when to start: earlier and lighter beats later and heavier, because spacing rewards the long run. Beginning some light preparation the summer before Year 11 can create extra opportunities for spaced practice — but it should be proportionate and sustainable, not a second school timetable through the holiday.

On keeping going: motivation is not the thing that gets revision done — a small, specific, unavoidable first step is. "Revise biology" is paralysing; "close the book and write down the seven life processes" is doable. A word for parents

You can't do the retrieval for them — that's the one part that has to happen inside their head. But you can do something genuinely useful: be the person who holds the flashcards and asks the questions. Does re-reading and highlighting actually work for revision?

Not very well, which surprises most students because both feel productive. In the research, re-reading has inconsistent effects and highlighting or underlining has repeatedly failed to improve learning — they were rated 'low utility'. The problem is that recognising information on a page ('yes, I've seen this') is not the same as being able to recall it in an exam with the page shut. Highlighting can still be useful as a first step to organise notes, but it should never be the main event. Replace most re-reading time with testing yourself.

How long should a GCSE revision session be?

Shorter and more frequent beats long and occasional. A block of roughly 25–40 minutes can be a practical starting point, but there's no ideal length for everyone — the student should stop before concentration collapses, take a genuine break, and judge the session by what they actually retrieved or practised, not by the timer. What matters more than length: that the session involves active recall rather than passive reading, and that you return to the same material again a few days later rather than ticking it off once.

What is active recall or retrieval practice?

Retrieval practice (often called active recall) means deliberately pulling information out of your memory instead of putting it back in by re-reading. Closing the book and writing down everything you remember about a topic, answering flashcards, or doing a past-paper question from memory are all retrieval practice. Making a genuine attempt to retrieve the answer — and then checking and correcting it — strengthens later recall. It often feels harder than re-reading because it exposes gaps, but that effort pays off only when mistakes are identified and corrected.
