Electronic structure

Electronic structure shows how an atom’s electrons are arranged from the innermost available shell outwards.

The big picture

Electrons in an atom occupy the lowest available energy levels, starting with the innermost available shells. Electronic structure can be shown as numbers or as a diagram. For example, sodium is written as 2,8,1: two electrons in the lowest energy level, eight in the second and one in the third. You need to be able to represent the electronic structures of the first twenty elements in both forms.
